Commenting on July’s CSO live register figures released last Friday Sinn Féin Dublin Mid-West representative Eoin Ó Broin has said; “The number of people signing on in Clondalkin and Lucan has increased by 6% since Fine Gael and Labour took office” The latest figures show 9,472 people signing on in the Clondalkin Social Welfare Office at the end of July.

Ó Broin said:

“Unemployment in Dublin Mid-West continued to rise. At the end of July there were 9,721 people signing on at the Clondalkin Social Welfare office.

“The number of people signing on in Clondalkin and Lucan has increased by 6% since Fine Gael and Labour took office

“For twelve months Sinn Féin has been highlighting the unemployment crisis in Dublin Mid-West. Despite the clear need for a government strategy to create jobs Fine Gael and Labour continue to sit on their hands and do nothing.

“Dublin Mid-West urgently needs a jobs task force. We need the key players sat around a table devising and implementing a jobs plan for the area.

“The only way to reduce the numbers of people signing on is to invest in job retention and creation schemes. This requires Government to release some of the funds in the National Pension Reserve fund as a matter of urgency.

“Those areas that have a disproportionately high level of unemployment must be prioritised for receipt of these funds.

“Unless the Government acts now we are facing a generation lost to emigration and long term unemployment. “ ENDS
